Baseball Splits Versus Findlay To Open GLIAC Play

The Northwood University baseball team opened GLIAC play by splitting a pair of games against Findlay Saturday afternoon (March 23).  Findlay won game one 12-6 before the Timberwolves claimed a 4-0 win in game two.

Northwood is now 6-7 overall, 1-1 in the GLIAC.  Findlay stands at 7-8 overall, 1-1 in the GLIAC.

The games were originally scheduled to be played at Northwood, but were moved to Tiffin because of poor field conditions at both Northwood and Findlay.

Game one was tied 2-2 heading into the top of the fifth inning when Findlay took control.  The Oilers scored three in the fifth, one in the sixth and six more in the seventh to go up 12-3.  NU scored three runs in the seventh to round out the scoring.  Seth Szafranski (Coldwater, Mich./Kellogg CC) went 3-4 in the game, while Jason Fracassa (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) and Eric Altman (West Bloomfield, Mich./St. Clair) each added two hits and an RBI.

The story of game two was the pitching performance of Jake Winicki (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice).  He tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing six hits (all singles) and one walk while striking out six.  The Timberwolves scored all four of their runs in the fourth inning, with Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.) and Szafranski picking up RBIs.

Northwood and Findlay will finish their weekend series Sunday with a single game at Noon.
