The Northwood University baseball team earned a 4-3 win over Walsh to finish a three-game series Wednesday afternoon (April 3).
Northwood is now 9-11 overall, 4-5 in the GLIAC. Walsh falls to 13-9 overall, 7-5 in the GLIAC.
The game was scoreless heading into the fifth inning when Walsh got on the board with an RBI single. Northwood responded in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single of their own by Anthony Dipaolo (Northville, Mich. / Divine Child). The Cavaliers went up 2-1 in the seventh, but the Timberwolves put together the key rally of the game on back-to-back pitches in the bottom of the inning. Seth Szafranski (Coldwater, Mich. / Kellogg CC) had an RBI triple to left center to plate Zyke Bailey (Taylor, Mich. / H.S. Truman) to tie the game. On the very next pitch, Tyler Beatty (Clare, Mich.) hit a home run to deep right to put NU on top 4-2. Walsh plated a run in the ninth but got no closer.
Beatty led the Northwood offense with two RBI's and a run scored. Dipaolo had two hits and an RBI, while Jake Oard (Beaverton, Mich.) added two hits and a run scored. Northwood got a strong start from Jake Winicki (Birmingham, Mich. / Brother Rice), who allowed two runs in eight innings of work. He struck out eight while improving to 3-1. Jordan Schwellenbach (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) closed the game out in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Northwood will host Wayne State for a three-game series beginning this Saturday (April 6). The doubleheader will get under way at 1 p.m.
