The Northwood University baseball team earned a doubleheader split at Ashland Saturday afternoon (April 13). Ashland earned an 11-0 win in game one before Northwood bounced back for a 5-3 win in game two.
Northwood is now 11-15 overall, 6-9 in the GLIAC. Ashland stands at 23-9 overall, 12-5 in the GLIAC.
The Eagles took control of game one early on, plating one in the first and three more in the second. Ashland then scored two in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to earn the win. Five different Timberwolves had one hit in the game for Northwood.
Ashland took the early lead in game two as well, scoring single runs in the second and third innings to go up 2-0. But Northwood put together the key inning of the contest in the fourth, scoring four runs on a pair of two-run hits. Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) drove in a pair on a single, as did Andrew Fleming (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC). After Ashland cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth, NU used a suicide squeeze bunt by Zac Zoellner (Traverse City, Mich./Central) to make the score 5-3. Neither team would plate a run in the final two innings. Rogers finished with two hits and two RBI's, while Zoellner finished with two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Jake Winicki (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings of work. Cody Fenskie (St. Charles, Mich.) got the final three outs of the game to earn his first save of the season.
The two teams will play one game on Sunday (April 14) to wrap up the weekend series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
