The Northwood University baseball team earned a comeback 3-2 win over Ashland Sunday afternoon (April 14).
The win gives the Timberwolves the weekend series, taking two of the three games. Northwood is now 12-15 overall, 7-9 in the GLIAC. Ashland falls to 23-10 overall, 12-6 in the GLIAC.
Northwood got the scoring going in the in the third inning with an RBI single that plated Jake Oard (Beaverton, Mich.). Ashland responded with single runs in the fourth and the fifth innings to lead 2-1.
The score remained 2-1 until the ninth inning when Northwood put together the key rally of the game. Northwood had runners on first with one out when the Timberwolves registered back-to-back singles. The first one by Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) scored Jordan Turner (Farmington, Mich.) and tied the game at 2-2. Oard then gave the Timberwolves the lead with a single of his own that plated Seth Szafranski (Coldwater, Mich./Kellogg CC). The Eagles got one runner on in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to tie the game.
Northwood pitchers Steven Latos (Lloydminster, Saskatchewan / Thompson Rivers U.) and Cody Fenskie (St. Charles, Mich.) combined to allow two runs and just five hits while striking out eight. Latos gave up two runs on three hits while striking out six in 4 2/3 innings of work. Fenskie came in in the fifth inning and threw the rest of the game, giving up two hits in 4 1/3 innings of work to earn the win.
The Timberwolves will travel to Grand Valley State Tuesday (April 16) for a single game. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
