Baseball Claims 8-7 Comeback Win Over Ohio Dominican

The Northwood University baseball team earned an important 8-7 come-from-behind road victory at Ohio Dominican Sunday afternoon (April 28).

Northwood opened the scoring in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Anthony Dipaolo (Northville, Mich./Divine Child) that plated Jake Oard (Beaverton, Mich.).  NU later went up 2-1 on a run-scoring single by Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.).  That is when ODU posted a big inning, plating five runs in the bottom of the fourth.  The Timberwolves came back immediately with two in the fifth thanks to an error and a Lee walk with the bases loaded,  but Ohio Dominican scored one in the bottom of the inning to make the score 7-4.

The game remained 7-4 until the eighth inning until the eighth inning when the Timberwolves began their comeback.  Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) got things going with an RBI single.  Jason Fracassa (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) then had an RBI single, sending the game to the ninth inning with ODU leading 7-6.  In the ninth inning, Northwood had two outs and nobody on base when they began their rally.  Andrew Fleming (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg) walked and was then drove on a clutch double by Oard to tie the game.  Rogers then gave the Timberwolves the lead with a single to plate Oard.  Jordan Schwellebach (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) then retired the Panthers 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to earn the win.

Oard and Rogers each finished with three hits and two runs scored at the top of the lineup to lead the Northwood offense.  Lee finished with two hits and two RBI's Sean Cunningham (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills) allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings of relief to earn his second win of the season.

Northwood will host Grand Valley State in the Timberwolves' home finale Wednesday (May 1).  First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
