Baseball Splits Pair Against Seton Hill

Baseball Splits Pair Against Seton Hill

The Northwood University baseball team split a doubleheader against Seton Hill Thursday afternoon (March 13). Seton Hill won game one 7-6 in eight innings before Northwood took the nightcap 6-3

Northwood is now 6-6 on the season. Seton Hill stands at 8-6

In game one, Northwood got off to a fast start. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, the Timberwolves plated four runs to earn the early lead. Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) had a two-run single, which was followed by an RBI hit by Zyke Bailey (Taylor, Mich./H.S. Truman).  Pulver and Bailey then combined to pull off a double steal, with Pulver stealing home on the play to put the Timberwolves up 4-1 after one inning.

The score remained 4-1 until the fourth when mistakes cost Northwood the lead. With the first two batters retired, Seton Hill rallied to score four runs. The Timberwolves hit a batter, had a balk and committed two errors after there were two outs, making all four runs unearned.

Northwood tied the game in the fourth on an Andrew Fleming (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC) RBI single that scored Bailey.  After Seton Hill went back up by one in the sixth, Fleming had a bunt single in the sixth that scored Tyler Beatty (Clare, Mich./Davenport) to even the game at 6-6.

The Griffins scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the eighth on a double. Northwood got a runner on in the bottom of the inning but were unable to tie the game.

Fleming led Northwood with three hits and two RBIs, while Pulver finished with two hits and two RBIs. Jake Winicki (Birmingham, Mich./ Brother Rice) took the loss, allowed three earned runs in 7 1/3 inning of work.

Game two saw Northwood take an early lead once again, as Eric Altman (West Bloomfield, Mich./St. Clair CC) had an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning to put NU up 1-0. Seton Hill eventually took the lead in the fifth, going up 3-1 heading into the sixth inning.  But that's when the Timberwolves took over – NU scored three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to earn the win. Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.), Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) and Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) all had RBIs over the final two innings.

Pulver had three hits in game two, while Rogers, Smith and Altman each finished with two. Matt Theiss (Midland, Mich.) picked up his second win of the season, allowing two runs in five innings of work. Jason Wimbury (Warren, Mich./Kaskaskia CC) threw two shutout innings to earn his first save.

Northwood will finish its Florida trip with a single game against Upper Iowa Friday afternoon (March 14). Game time is set for 2 p.m.
