Baseball Drops Pair To Hillsdale

MIDLAND, MICH. - The Northwood University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Hillsdale Wednesday afternoon (April 9).  The Chargers won game one 7-2 before posting a 5-2 win in the nightcape.

Hillsdale is now 11-21 overall, 9-8 in the GLIAC. Northwood stands at 11-17 overall, 3-11 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves were one strike away from posting a comeback win in game one, only to see Hillsdale rally back for the win. NU trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Timberwolves plated a pair of runs.  Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) had the big hit of the inning, an RBI triple that plated Andrew Fleming (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC). Rogers then scored on a sac fly by Larsen Cronkright (Midland, Mich./Kellogg CC) to send Northwood to the final inning leading 2-1. The Chargers were down to their final strike with a runner on second when HC put together a big rally. Hillsdale scored six runs with two outs on just three hits. NU walked four batters, hit another and had two passed balls in the rally. Jason Wimbury (Warren, Mich./Kaskaskia CC) took the loss despite pitching well, allowing three earned runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.

Hillsdale took the early lead in game two as well, scoring one in the third and two more in the fourth to go up 3-0. Northwood got on the board in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Justin Zyvon (Sterling Heights, Mich./Macomb CC) to cut the lead to two, but the Chargers got a pair of unearned runs in the sixth to go up 5-1. Northwood rallied back one final time in the seventh. Anthony DiPaolo (Northville, Mich./Divine Child) had an RBI double to plate Zac Zoellner (Traverse City, Mich./Central) to make the score 5-2. NU eventually got the tying run on base but was unable to score any more runs. Jordan Schwellenbach (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage)  took the loss despite allowing two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Northwood will host Ashland Saturday (April 12). The doubleheader will get under way at 1 p.m.
