Men's Basketball Defeats Grand Valley State 60-52

The Northwood University men's basketball team claimed an important 60-52 victory over Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon (February 16).

Northwood is now 11-12 overall, 10-9 in the GLIAC.  GVSU falls to 16-7 overall, 13-6 in the GLIAC.

Grand Valley State was the better team for the majority of the first half, leading 21-12 with 3:16 remaining.  But Northwood finished with a flourish – after scoring 12 points in the opening 16:44, the Timberwolves netted 12 in the final 2:56.  NU out-scored the Lakers 12-4 in that stretch to cut the Laker lead to 25-24 at the break.  Northwood trailed by just one despite shooting 33.3 percent from the floor. 

Northwood took control of the game early in the second half, going on an 11-0 run to break the lead open to 47-34 with 11:04 remaining.  GVSU cut the lead down to three at 51-48 with 1:27 remaining, but a 3-point play by Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) pushed the lead back to six.  The Lakers got no closer the rest of the way.

For the game, Northwood shot 39.6 percent (19-48) while Grand Valley State finished at 40.0 percent (20-50).  NU made seven triples to three for the Lakers and out-scored GVSU 15-9 at the foul line.

Three Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Wes Wilcox (Roselle, Ill./Harper CC).  He finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.  Cameron Joyce (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent St. Mary's) had 13 points, four assists and four steals.  Booker Stoudmire (Ypsilanti, Mich./Belleville) added 10 points off the bench.

Northwood will travel to Michigan Tech Thursday night (February 21).  Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
