Men's Basketball Falls 90-80 In Overtime At Michigan Tech In GLIAC Quarterfinals

The Northwood University men's basketball team dropped a tough 90-80 overtime contest at Michgian Tech in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament Wednesday night (February 6).

Northwood, which was seeded seventh heading into the event, finishes the season 13-14 overall.  Michigan Tech, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, improves to 20-7 with the win.

The opening half of the game was close throughout, with neither team leading by more than six points. Michigan Tech eventually took a 33-32 lead at the break after the two teams had six ties and nine lead changes.  Northwood shot 45.8 percent from the floor (11-24) while Michigan Tech finished at 44.0 percent (11-25).

Michigan Tech opened up a seven point lead on two separate occasions in the second half, but Northwood fought back to earn a lead late. The Timberwolves led by four (67-63) with 2:12 remaining, but NU went 1-3 from the foul line in the final minutes.  Leading 70-67, Northwood missed a free throw, which was followed by a MTU 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining to tie the game.  The Timberwolves got off a triple at the buzzer, but it was no good, sending the game to overtime.

The Michigan Tech offense was the story of overtime, scoring 20 points while missing just one shot total.  MTU went 5-6 from the floor, 1-1 from 3-point range and 9-9 from the foul line.  The Huskies scored 12 of the first 15 points of overtime to take control.

For the game, Northwood finished at 50.0 percent from the floor (28-56) compared to Michigan Tech at 47.4 percent (27-57).  Both teams went 9-25 from 3-point range (36.0 percent).  The Huskies earned the win at the foul line, where they finished 27-29 overall (93.1 percent).  Northwood was 15-20 at the line (75.0 percent).

Wes Wilcox (Roselle, Ill./Harper) led the way for the Timberwolves, scoring a game-high 28 points.  He was 7-9 from the floor, 3-5 from 3-point range and 11-14 from the foul line. Wilcox also added six rebounds and five assists.  Booker Stoudmire (Ypsilanti, Mich./Belleville) added 13 points in his final career game, while Darvin Ham (Saginaw, Mich./Bridgeport) had 12 points and nine rebounds.
