The Northwood University men's soccer team posted its second straight victory Sunday afternoon (September 22), defeating Malone 1-0.
Northwood is now 2-2 overall, 2-1 in the GLIAC. Malone falls to 1-5 overall, 0-4 in the GLIAC.
The lone goal of the contest came just short of 12 minutes into the game. Gino Pasquali (Shelby Twp., Mich./Eisenhower) got a feed from Brent Schmid (Shelby Twp., Mich./Eisenhower) on a well-executed give-and-go play, which Pasquali buried to put the Timberwolves up 1-0 at 11:59.
The Timberwolves were controlling the play for the opening 22 minutes, but the game changed when Northwood went down a man on a red card. Malone had chances over the final 23 minutes of the first half but was unable to find the back of the net. Both teams had six shots in the opening 45 minutes.
While the possession in the second half was fairly even, it was Malone that generated more scoring chances. The Pioneers held a 10-5 edge in shots in the half and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. But the NU defense played well in the final third, not allowing Malone to net the equalizer.
Overall, Malone finished with a 16-11 edge in shots and a 4-3 advantage in corner kick. Northwood keeper Johannes Sterobo (Odense, Denmark / Tornbjerg) made eight saves for his sixth career shutout.
Northwood will host rival Saginaw Valley State Wednesday (September 25). Match time is set for 4 p.m.
