MIDLAND, MICH. - Two of the top-ranked teams in the Midwest region will face off with GLIAC Championship and NCAA tournament ramifications Friday afternoon (October 31), as the Northwood men's soccer team will host Saginaw Valley State at 4 p.m. at Dean Field.
The teams are both ranked in the top four in the Midwest – SVSU stands in second (11-2-2 region record) while Northwood is fourth (10-3-1 region record). Quincy is ranked first (15-0-2), while Drury (13-3-0) and Tiffin (11-3-1) are third and fifth, respectively. The top five teams in the region will reach the NCAA Tournament in November.
Both teams are also still alive in the race for the GLIAC Championship as well, which features the top three teams being separated by a total of two points. Northwood stands at 9-3-1 in the conference,, good for 28 points. Saginaw Valley holds a 9-2-2 GLIAC record with 29 points, while Tiffin is the overall leader with 30 points at 10-3.
Tiffin is set to host Findlay Friday at 2 p.m. With a Tiffin draw or loss, the winner of the Northwood vs. Saginaw Valley match will earn at least a share of the GLIAC Championship.
Friday's match also is Halloween, be sure to wear your costume for you chance at winning a prize! Northwood athletics will also be raising money for cancer awareness. All donations will go to benefit the Mid-Michigan Medical Center Cancer Fund in Midland. The fund helps local cancer patients off-set the costs associated with their treatments. It's used to help the patients with transportation and lodging costs as well as the costs for ancillary medical supplies, including: wigs, scarfs and other head wear.
The GLIAC Tournament is set to begin Friday (November 7), with the top overall seed serving as host for the event.
