Men's Tennis Downs Wayne State 6-1 In GLIAC Tournament Semifinals

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University men's tennis team advanced to the final round of the GLIAC Tournament with a 6-1 win over Wayne State in the semifinals Saturday night (April 26).

Northwood is now 16-3 on the season. Wayne State falls to 10-9.

NU swept doubles, earning an 8-4 win at the No. 1 spot from the team of Jean Menard (Amboise, France) and Lorenzo Montegiorgi (Velletri, Italy). Konstantin Zhukov (Kazan, Russia) and Samuel Walendowsky (Brusque, Brazil) picked up an 8-4 victory at the No. 2 doubles, while the freshmen team of Salikh Gilmutdinov (Kazan, Russia) and Austin Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow) earned a dramatic 9-8 win at the No. 3 position.

Northwood entered singles with a 3-0 advantage. The Timberwolves earned wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions to seal the win. Menard dropped just five games in his 6-2, 6-3 win at the top spot, while Zhukov was victorious at the No. 4 position 6-3, 6-4.  

Northwood will play in the GLIAC Championship match against #7 seeded Findlay. Match time is set for 8:30 a.m. tomorrow (April 27) at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
