MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University track and field teams hosted the annual Northwood Open on Saturday afternoon (April 11).
No team scoring was taken at the event, which featured athletes from Northwood, Saginaw Valley State, Lake Superior State, Central Michigan, Lansing Community College, Siena Heights, Spring Arbor and more. Northwood earned a victory in five events throughout the day.
For the women, freshman Kara Young (Zephyrhills, Fla.) won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.65. Claudia Coleman (Keller,Tx / Fossil Ridge (NU-Texas)) ran 25.69 for a first place finish in the 200 meter dash. Young finished in third with a time of 26.51. Elaina Meadows (Schoolcraft, Mich.) and Dana Turner (Maywood, Ill. / Walther Lutheran) took first and second in the women's long jump with marks of 5.31 and 5.29 meters.
Meadows, Coleman, Valencia Lynch and Young won the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 47.99.Madison Arnouts (Grand Ledge, Mich.) finished second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.36 and second in the 400 meter dash at 1:06.74. In the 3,000 meter run, Chloe Thiel (Plainwell, Mich.) ran 10:55.20 for second place. The women's 4x400 meter relay team finished third with a time of 4:16.72.
On the men's side, Clay and Gardner finished second and third in the 200 meter dash with times of 22.06 and 22.09, respectively. Gardner also finished second in the 100 meter dash at 11.12. Kyle Vandersyde (Hopkins, Mich.) ran 15.52 to finish second in the 110 meter hurdles. Jordan Fields(Lauderhill, Fla. / Blanche Ely) ran 57.44 in the 400 meter hurdles for second place. Will Moench(Holland, Mich. / West Ottawa) and Dave Rowley (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) finished second and third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with times of 10:13.52 and 10:26.37, respectively. Tray Thompson(Fort Worth, Tx. / Duncanville (NU-Texas)) ran 1:58.82 in the 800 for a third place finish. Wilchcombe finished in third with a mark of 6.92 meters in the men's long jump, while Paul Evans(Lenox, Mich. / New Haven) placed third in the men's discus with a mark of 47.7 meters.
The team of Jeremy Wilchcombe (Freeport, Bahamas / St. Georges(NU-TX)), Wally Clay (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Southwestern), Mike Ankoviak (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) and Josh Gardner (Howell, Mich.) won the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 41.83, while the team of Jon Thompson (Albuquerque, N. Mex. / NU-Texas), Karmine Jarmon (Chicago, Ill. / Simeon),John King (Mesick, Mich.) and Jalen Hodgson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Parchment) ran 43.03 for third. The men's 4x400 meter relay team finished second with a time of 3:20.06.
The Timberwolves are traveling to the Al Owens Invite at Grand Valley State next weekend (April 17 and 18).
