ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team falls to Grand Valley State 12-6 and 7-2 on Thursday afternoon (April 7).
The Timberwolves currently stand at 12-14 on the year, 3-7 in the GLIAC. Grand Valley State improves to 22-6 overall, 7-3 in the GLIAC.
After trailing 1-0 after the first inning, NU was able to plate a pair of runs on a Brooke Wauters (St. Clare Shores, Mich./Lakeshore) single. The Lakers added two more runs in the bottom of the inning to reclaim a 3-2 lead. The Timberwolves responded in the third to take a 4-3 advantage going into the bottom of the fourth. GVSU picked up two in the fourth and two in the fifth, before NU added a pair in the sixth. Grand Valley State finished the sixth with five runs and the Timberwolves were unable to respond, falling 12-6 in game one.
GVSU out-hit NU 12-6, while the Timberwolves committed three errors and left nine runners on base. Lauren Look (Pinconning, Mich. / Pinconning (Cleveland State) and Riley Ostapowicz (Grand Rapids, Mich. / West Catholic) each finished 2-3 with an run scored. Look added an RBI. In the circle, Marissa Tiano (Warren, Mich. / Regina) allowed six earned runs in the loss and is now 2-2 on the year.
In game two, the Lakers continued momentum with an early 1-0 lead before adding four more runs for a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. Northwood plated its only two runs in the bottom of the fifth to fall 7-2 after six innings.
For the game, Grand Valley State registered 12 hits to just four for NU. Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, Ont./Christ the King Catholic Secondary) finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Vanessa Ewing (Maybee, Mich./Dundee) earned the loss and now stands at 3-7 on the year.
The Timberwolves are scheduled to play at Lake Erie on Sunday (April 10) after having to cancel the games at Ashland tomorrow due to inclement weather. The doubleheader on Sunday is set to start at Noon. Game times and location throughout the season are subject to change.
