LOCATION: University Center, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University

RECAP: Northwood track & field teams registered numerous big performances while competing in their season-opener, the SVSU Holiday Open Friday-Saturday (December 7).

  • Mason Phillips picked up right where he left off a year ago, breaking his own school record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.7, which is good for an NCAA automatic qualifying time.
  • Phillips also picked up the win in the 200 with another NCAA auto qualifier, clocking a 21.15. His times in both the 60 and the 200 are currently the top times in Division II.
  • Christopher Bent also got off to a good start in the 60 and the 200, finishing third in both the 60 (6.91) and 200 (21.76). Those times are good for seventh and second, respectively, on the Northwood all-time performers list.
  • Bent and Phillips joined with Andrew Davis and Jeronn Body to place second in the 4X400 relay, clocking a 3:18.59.
  • Netunji Paige picked up a school record time in the 1,000 meter run, winning the event
  • at 2:28.20. Trestin Mancillas-Finnerty was third at 2:29.80, which now places him second behind Paige in NU history.
  • The Northwood throws also had a strong start to the season, going 2-3-4 in the shot put thanks to Hunter Berecz (15.81 – second overall), Travis Schepers (15.64 – third) and Zac Stickler (15.63 – fourth). Those marks place Berecz, Schepers and Stickler fourth, fifth and sixth on the NU performers list.
  • Berecz also put himself sixth on the Northwood weight throw performers list in the weight throw with a toss of 17.16 meters.

  • The throwers were the highlight of the event on the women's side, led by Jessica Kursinsky. She had her first career NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the shot put, winning the event at 14.18 meters.  Kursinsky was already ranked second on the all-time performer list – today's mark moves her within a half meter of record-holder and Northwood Athletic Hall of Fame member Kristin Cameron.
  • Jessica Marvin had a big day in both the shot and the weight. She moved to fifth on the Northwood performers list in the shot with a toss of 12.01 meters.
  • Marvin also led the way for the Timberwolves in the weight throw, placing second at 16.92 meters. That is good for third in school history.
  • Taky Ezell (16.92 meters and Hannah Gearhart (13.85 meters) placed second and sixth, respectively, in the weight throw.

  • The track and field teams will resume action following the winter break at the GVSU Bob Eubanks Open. The meet is set for January 10.
