The Northwood University volleyball team turned in one of its best all-around performances of the season Tuesday night (October 30), sweeping Hillsdale 3-0. Set scores were 25-18, 25-9, 25-18.
Northwood is now 20-5 overall, 14-0 in the GLIAC. NU also finishes the regular season undefeated at home (9-0). Hillsdale falls to 15-10 overall, 11-3 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves set the tone for the match right away, scoring six of the first seven points of the match. From that point on, Hillsdale never got closer than five points the rest of the opening set. Northwood hit .263 in the set (16-6-38) while holding Hillsdale to a .152 clip (9-4-33).
The second set was more of the same. Northwood led 7-2 early and continued to add to the lead. NU eventually scored nine straight points during one stretch to make their lead 21-6 before going on to the 25-9 set win. The Timberwolves hit .464 (15-2-28) in the second while holding Hillsdale to a -.074 mark (5-7-27).
In the third set, the Chargers played better early. The score was tied 11-11 before Northwood started to take control. The Timberwolves out-scored the Chargers 14-7 the rest of the way, including a 6-2 run to finish things off.
For the match, Northwood hit .320 (47-14-103) while holding Hillsdale to a .101 clip (24-15-89). NU also finished with a 42-33 advantage in digs and a 6-1 edge in aces.
Three Timberwolves finished with at least 10 kills, led by Juliia Pakhomenko (Donetsk, Ukraine). She finished with 15 kills on 32 attempts (.312), 10 digs and two aces. Tatjana Rajic (Belgrade, Serbia) had 11 kills and zero errors on 18 attempts (.611) to go with three aces, while Zina Liubymova (Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine) added 11 kills, six digs and three aces.
Northwood will travel to Michigan Tech Friday (November 2). Match time is set for 7 p.m.
