The Northwood University volleyball team earned its fourth straight win Friday night (October 4), posting a 3-0 victory over Walsh. Set scores were 25-14, 25-16 and 25-21.
Northwood improves to 9-5 overall, 4-2 in the GLIAC. Walsh falls to 4-9 overall, 1-5 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves jumped out to a big early lead in the first set and never looked back. NU scored five straight points to go up 8-3 and eventually led 20-9 en route to a 1-0 lead. The Timberwolves hit .314 in the set (16-5-35) while holding Walsh to a .111 clip.
Northwood continued to maintain control in the second set. NU broke open a 3-3 tie early on by scoring five straight points to take a lead they would not give up. Walsh got no closer than four points the rest of the set. The Timberwolves offense was even better in the second set, hitting .371 (18-5-35) while the Cavaliers finished at .000 (6-6-34).
Walsh played its best set of the night in the third frame, getting out to a 12-8 lead. This time, Northwood waited until late in the set to take over. With the score tied at 19, the Timberwolves scored five straight points to earn the win.
For the match, Northwood hit .333 overall, finishing with 52 kills and 15 errors on 111 attempts. Walsh finished at .143 (27-13-98). NU held a 51-38 edge in digs and a 5-1 advantage in aces.
Leading the way for Northwood was senior outside hitter Juliia Pakhomenko (Donetsk, Ukraine). She finished with a match-high 20 kills and a .486 attack percentages to go with eight digs. Ally Hoomaian (Novi, Mich.) had one of her best matches of the season, finishing with 11 kills and a .444 attack percentage.
Northwood will host Malone Saturday (October 4). Match time is set for 4 p.m.
