Volleyball Announces Recruiting Class

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University volleyball team has added four players for the 2020 season.

Maddy House, Haley Jaster, Kiana Martens and Mackelle Thompson will join the team next season.

"It was important for us to replenish our roster with highly competitive volleyball players," said head coach Dave Shumaker. "These athletes are super-competitive.  Their drive should help them thrive at this level."


Maddy House, 5-8 Outside Hitter

  • Three-year letter winner for Flushing High school.  
  • Played club for Legacy and Five1 volleyball clubs.
  • She intends to pursue a degree in either Sports Management or Cyber Security. 
  • Named to All-Conference

Coach Shumaker on House

"Maddy is an extremely smart hitter who rarely hits the ball to the same place twice in a row.  She loves to compete and figure out the best way to beat her opponents.  She will bring great enthusiasm and fighting spirit to our gym culture."

Haley Jaster, 6-1 Middle Blocker/Opposite

  • Four-year letter recipient from Bullock Creek and Dow High Schools
  • Played four years of club for both Michigan Elite and Five1 volleyball clubs
  • Named All-Conference and All-Region
  • Named Academic All-Conference
  • Intends to pursue a degree in Marketing

Kiana Martens, 5-11 Middle Blocker/Opposite

  • Two-year letter winner for St. John's High school  
  • played two years of club for Five1 Volleyball Club
  • Represented the Lakeshore Region in the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships
  • Named All-Conference and All-Region
  • Named Academic All-State
  • Intends on majoring in Accounting

Coach Shumaker on Martens

"Don't let Kiana's huge smile fool you.  She is a competitor.  She is fast; she jumps high; and she hits the ball hard.  She is also an instinctive blocker.  She can play any front row position, but will probably play the right side early in her career."

Mackelle Thompson, 5-7 Libero/Setter

  • Four-year letter winner for Ithaca High school.  
  • played four years of club for both Michigan Elite and Five1 volleyball clubs.
  • Named to All-Conference and All-Region
  • Named Academic All-State
  • Intends to pursue a degree in Sports Management or Marketing.
