D1 Hockey Wins Back To Back Games Over Kent State

RECAP: The Division 1 hockey team earned back-to-back wins over Kent State University this weekend, taking a 4-2 victory at home on Friday night (October 10) and edging out a 6-5 overtime thriller on Saturday afternoon (October 11). 

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS  

  • Northwood got off to a fast start, opening the scoring just three minutes into the first period with a power-play goal from Milos Todorovic, assisted by Bryce Garber and Owen Croston. Eight minutes later, Todorovic would get his second of the night set up by Samuel Assinewai and Cameron Duffany to give the Timberwolves a 2-0 lead. Kent State responded with a power-play goal of their own, cutting the deficit to 2-1 by the end of the first period. 

  • The Golden Flashes tied the game 2-2 five minutes into the second period. 

  • With five minutes remaining in regulation, Assinewai restored Northwood's lead, assisted by Duffany and James Sigmon. Robert Vanderdonck sealed the win with an insurance goal in the final seconds, assisted by Donald Gooley and Sigmon, securing a 4-2 victory for the Timberwolves.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS  

  • The Golden Flashes opened the scoring eight minutes into the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later, Alex Bedenko and Cameron Duffany set up Todorovic to tie the game at 1-1. Kent State responded five minutes later to regain the lead, ending the first period up 2-1. 

  • Six minutes into the second period, Kent State extended their lead to 3-1. Eight minutes later, Bryce Garber brought Northwood back within one, making it 3-2 with assists from James Sigmon and Nathan Ayuyu. 

  • A high-scoring third period saw Northwood take control. Bedenko scored twice, and Leo Crawford added another to give the Timberwolves a 5-3 lead. Bedenko's first goal came on the power-play, assisted by Chase Temple and Samuel Assinewai. Garber and Zachary McCarthy assisted on Bedenko's second, while McCarthy also picked up an assist on Crawford's goal. Kent State responded quickly, scoring just twenty seconds after Northwood's fifth to make it 5-4, and then tied the game 5-5 with one minute remaining in regulation. 

  • In overtime, it took just fourty seconds for Assinewai to find Todorovic, who buried the game-winner to give Northwood a thrilling 6-5 victory.
