D1 Hockey Takes Two From Cleary

SCORE: Northwood Timberwolves 7, Cleary Cougars 5 / Northwood 4, Cleary 1

RECAP: The Division 1 hockey team had two wins over the weekend against Cleary University, with a 7-5 away win on Friday night (January 30) followed by a 4-1 home win on Saturday afternoon (January 31). 

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS  

  • Cleary opened the scoring in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Northwood answered quickly, as Jacob McLellan scored to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the period, Chase Temple set up Alex Bedenko to give the Timberwolves a 2-1 lead. Cleary responded to tie it at 2-2, but Temple found Bedenko again just before the intermission, sending Northwood into the break leading 3-2. 

  • Cleary took control in the second period, scoring three straight goals to jump ahead 5-3. Northwood pulled within one before the end of the period when Donald Gooley assisted Milos Todorovic to make it 5-4. 

  • The Timberwolves took over in the third period, scoring three unanswered goals. Robert Vanderdonck tied the game with help from Leo Crawford and Gooley. Bryce Garber then assisted Bedenko for his hat trick on the power play. Finally, Temple and Bedenko combined to set up Garber for an empty-net insurance goal. Northwood completed the comeback with a 7-5 win.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS  

  • Northwood opened the scoring in the first period when Garber and Jack Rivera set up Bedenko to make it 1-0. 

  • The Timberwolves added to their lead in the second period as Trevor Stenglein scored, assisted by Collin Baker and Rivera, to go up 2-0. Later in the period, Garber struck again on the power play, finishing a setup from Bedenko and Adam Moule to give Northwood a 3-0 advantage. 

  • Cleary got on the board with a power-play goal, but Northwood sealed the win when Moule scored an empty-net goal. The Timberwolves skated away with a 4-1 victory.
