D3 Hockey Respond with Shutout After One-Goal Loss To No. 5 Oakland

RECAP: The Division 3 hockey team splits games against Oakland over the weekend, losing 4-3 away on Friday evening (February 13), followed by a 1-0 win at home on Saturday afternoon (February 14). 

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS 

  • Oakland came out strong, scoring twice in the first five minutes to take a 2-0 lead in the opening period. Northwood answered before the break, as Sebastiano Iavasile found the back of the net off assists from Cade Sanborn and Alex Katch to cut the deficit to 2-1. 

  • Early in the second period, the Timberwolves evened the score at 2-2 when Evan Kennedy finished a setup from Carter Temple and Nickolas Moody. However, the Golden Grizzlies quickly responded to regain the lead, making it 3-2. 

  • Northwood battled back again in the third period, tying the game at 3-3 on a goal from Max Ciesielski, assisted by Sanborn and Iavasile. But Oakland secured the game-winner later in the period, handing the Timberwolves a 4-3 loss.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS 

  • Northwood got off to a fast start in the opening period, as Iavasile scored just three minutes in off assists from Sanborn and Ciesielski. Both teams had power-play opportunities in the first, but neither side was able to convert. 

  • Oakland controlled much of the second period, outshooting Northwood by a wide margin, but neither team managed to find the back of the net. 

  • The Golden Grizzlies continued to apply pressure in the third, firing nineteen shots on goal. However, the Timberwolves' defense held strong to secure a 1-0 victory. 

  • Goaltender Aidan Schultz was outstanding in net, stopping all forty-three shots he faced to earn the shutout.
