Baseball Earns 4-3 Walk-Off Win Over Saginaw Valley State

The Northwood University baseball team earned a 4-3 win over Saginaw Valley State Wednesday afternoon (March 26).

The game took place at Adrian College due to unplayable field conditions at NU and SVSU.

Northwood is now 9-8 overall, 2-2 in the GLIAC. SVSU falls to 4-10 overall, 1-3 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first inning, plating three runs. Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) led the inning off with a triple and later scored on an RBI groundout by Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley).  Later in the first inning, Eric Altman (West Bloomfield, Mich. /St. Clair CC) delivered a two-run double to make the score 3-0 after one inning.

The score remained 3-0 all the way until the eighth inning when SVSU plated a pair of runs. The Cardinals then tied the score in the ninth inning thanks to a bases-loaded walk. But the Timberwolves responded right away, earning the win in the bottom of the ninth inning. Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) led the inning off with a double to get the rally going. Zyke Bailey (Taylor, Mich./HS Truman) later drove in the game-winning RBI on a double to give Northwood the win.

Northwood finished the game with 11 hits, compared to six for SVSU.  The Timberwolves also had six extra base hits (five doubles, one triple) while the Cardinals finished with one double.

Bailey finished with two doubles and an RBI, while Rogers had two hits and an RBI. Lee added a pair of hits, while Altman finished with two RBIs. Steven Latos (Lloydminster, Alberta/Thompson Rivers U.) pitched well despite earning a no-decision on the mound. He threw six shutout innings, allowing four hits while striking out six. Adam Kroll (Marine City, Mich.) picked up the win in relief, tossing the final 1 1/3 innings.

Northwood will travel to Ohio Dominican for a series this Sunday and Monday (March 30-31).
