Baseball Earns 8-5 Win At Ohio Dominican

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Northwood University baseball team earned an 8-5 road win over Ohio Dominican Monday afternoon (March 31).

Northwood improves to 10-9 overall, 3-3 in the GLIAC. Ohio Dominican stands at 13-9 overall, 3-4 in the GLIAC.

ODU got off to a good start in the game, taking a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Northwood got on the board in the fifth with on an RBI single by Andrew Fleming (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC), but the Panthers responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to send the game to the sixth with ODU leading 3-1.

Northwood began its comeback in the sixth inning, plating four runs. The big play of the inning was a bases-loaded single by Eric Altman (West Bloomfield, Mich./St. Clair CC), which scored three runs thanks to a throwing error. Anthony DiPaolo (Northville, Mich./Divine Child) followed with an RBI single to make the score 5-3.

The score remained 5-3 until the bottom of the seventh when Ohio Dominican scored a pair of unearned runs to tie the game. Northwood bounced right back in the top of the eighth inning, thanks to a two-out, two-run single by Fleming.  Zyke Bailey (Taylor, Mich./H.S. Truman) then rounded out the scoring in the ninth inning with an RBI single.

Northwood finished the game with an 11-8 edge in hits. The Timberwolves drew four walks in the game, compared to eight for the Panthers. ODU left 12 runners on base, while Northwood left seven.

Four Timberwolves finished with two hits in the game, led by Fleming and Altman. Altman finished with two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored. Fleming had two hits and three RBIs. Larsen Cronkright (Midland, Mich./Kellogg CC) finished with two hits and two runs scored, while Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) had two hits and a run scored.

Jordan Schwellenbach (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) picked up the win thanks to 4 1/3 innings of strong relief. He allowed four hits and two runs (both unearned) to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Northwood will travel to Walsh Tuesday (April 1) for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for Noon.
