Baseball Sweeps Pair from Malone
MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep over Malone Saturday afternoon (April 26). The Timberwolves picked up wins by the score of 5-0 and 11-1.
Northwood is now 15-23 overall, 7-17 in the GLIAC. Malone falls to 17-27 overall, 12-16 in the GLIAC.
In game one, Northwood got the scoring going with a pair of runs. Wayne Moak (Marysville, Mich.) got NU on the board with a single, which was followed by a squeeze bunt by Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) that scored Tyler Beatty (Clare, Mich./Davenport).
The score remained 2-0 until the fourth inning when the Timberwolves plated three more runs. Moak had a double to make the score 3-0 and later scored on a wild pitch. Andrew Fleming (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC) rounded out the scoring with a run-scoring single.
Moak finished the game 3-3 with a pair of RBIs. Freshman Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) went 2-2 with a pair of runs scored.
Steven Latos (Lloydminster, Alberta/Thompson Rivers U.) picked up his second win of the season, allowing no runs in 5 1/3 innings of work. Jordan Schewellenbach (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) finished out the final 1 2/3 innings of the contest to complete the shutout.
Northwood took control of game two with a fast start, plating three runs in the first and four more in the second. Pulver started the scoring with a two-run single and later scored on an error to put NU up 3-0 after one inning.
In the second inning, Northwood plated four two-out runs. NU scored a run on an error to go up 4-0. Pulver then had an RBI single to make the score 5-0, which was followed by a two-run double by Beatty that extended the advantage to 7-0.
Malone scored their first run of the day in the top of the fourth, but the Timberwolves responded with four runs of their own. Beatty registered his fourth RBI of the game on a two-run single to put NU on top 9-1. Moak then had his third RBI of the day on a single that scored Beatty, which is followed by a Malone error that made the score 11-1. Neither team scored the rest of the way.
Beatty finished the game 3-4 with four RBIs, while Pulver went 3-4 with three RBIs. Larsen Cronkright (Midland, Mich./Kellogg CC) finished the game 2-4 with three runs scored.
Freshman Alex Lewandowski (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) improved to 3-2 on the season with five solid innings on the mound. He allowed one run in five innings of work, striking out four.
Northwood and Malone will finish their weekend series with a single game Sunday (April 27). Game time has been moved up to 11 a.m. – it was originally scheduled for Noon.
