Baseball Loses To Grand Valley State 7-4
MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team dropped a 7-4 contest to Grand Valley State Monday afternoon (April 28).
The game was the home finale for Northwood. NU falls to 16-24 overall, 8-18 in the GLIAC. GVSU improves to 28-11 overall, 19-6 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves got off to a good start in the game, plating a pair of runs in the first inning. Freshman Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) had a two-out, two-run single to put the Timberwolves on top 2-0 after one inning.
NU extended their lead in the third inning with two more runs. Justin Zyvon (Sterling Heights, Michl./Macomb CC) led the inning off with a single, which was followed by a Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) double to put two runners on with nobody out. Larsen Cronkright (Midland, Mich./Kellogg CC) plated Zyvon with a groundout, which was followed by a sacrifice fly by Zyke Bailey (Taylor, Mich./HS Truman) to put the Timberwolves up 4-0.
The score remained 4-0 until the sixth inning, when GVSU began their comeback. After Northwood retired the first two batters of the inning, the Lakers scored three runs. The final two runs came on an error by NU.
With Northwood still leading 4-3 in the eighth, Grand Valley's Giancarlo Brugnoni hit a two-run homer into a stiff wind to left field to put the Lakers up 5-4. The Lakers then scored two more runs in the ninth to put the game away.
Northwood finished the game with nine hits, three of which were by Rogers. Zyvon finished with two hits and two runs scored, while Pulver drove in a pair of runs.
Jake Winicki (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) took the loss despite pitching well. He allowed three earned runs in eight innings of working, giving up seven hits while striking out three.
Northwood and GVSU will play a doubleheader in Allendale Wednesday (April 30).
