Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader At Findlay
FINDLAY, OHIO – The Northwood University baseball team began its final series of the season with a doubleheader sweep over Findlay Saturday afternoon (May 3). Northwood earned a 12-2 win in game one before claiming a 5-3 win in game two.
Northwood is now 18-26 overall, 10-20 in the GLIAC. Findlay falls to 11-32 overall, 8-25 in the GLIAC.
In game one, Northwood led 3-0 just four batters into the game thanks to a three-run homer by Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.). Findlay responded with single runs in the first and the third, but Northwood extended its lead in the fourth inning. NU made it 4-2 on a Findlay error which was followed by a Justin Zyvon (Sterling Heights, Mich./Macomb CC) RBI single. The Timberwolves then put the game away with a big sixth inning, plating seven runs. Andrew Fleming (Olivet, Mich.), Zyvon, and Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) all drew bases loaded walks to make the score 8-2. After a Zyke Bailey (Taylor, Mich./HS Truman) RBI groundout, Smith continued his big game with a two-run double. Freshman Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) rounded out the scoring with an RBI single.
Smith finished the game 3-4 with a home run, a double and five RBIs. Pulver finished 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Steven Latos (Lloydminster, Alberta/Thompson Rivers U.) picked up his third win of the season with five strong innings. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out six.
Northwood also got off to a fast start in game two, scoring a run in the first inning on a Tyler Beatty (Clare, Mich./Davenport) RBI single. Findlay responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on a two-out single to level the score. NU went back on top by scoring a pair in the third inning, thanks to a two-run single by Eric Altman (West Bloomfield, Mich./St. Clair CC). The Timberwolves extended their lead in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Rogers and Pulver to go up 5-1. Findlay put up single runs in the fourth and the sixth but were unable to get any closer
Rogers and Pulver each finished the game 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Zyvon scored two runs, while Altman drove in two runs. Alex Lewandowski (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) picked up his fourth win of the season, tossing a complete game. He allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out four.
The two teams will finish their seasons with a single game Sunday (May 4). First pitch is set for Noon.
