Baseball Drops Season Finale At Findlay 5-4
FINDLAY, OHIO – The Northwood University baseball team saw its 2014 season come to an end with a 5-4 loss at Findlay Sunday afternoon (May 4).
Northwood finishes the season 18-27 overall, 10-21 in the GLIAC. Findlay ends up 12-31 overall, 9-24 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves got the scoring going in the second inning on a solo home run by senior shortstop Tyler Beatty (Clare, Mich./Davenport). Findlay responded with single runs in the second and third innings to go up 2-1, but Northwood came back in the fourth to level the score. Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.) scored on a double steal attempt, sending the game to the fifth tied 2-2.
Northwood then went on top in the fifth inning thanks to RBI singles by Cody Rogers (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) and Smith, putting the Timberwolves back on top 4-2.
Facing getting swept by Northwood over the three-game weekend series, Findlay fought back to earn a win in the late innings. The Oilers scored single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth inning to claim the victory. Findlay's Michael Louis led the ninth off with a double and later scored on a walk-off single by Reid Rothenbuhler.
Northwood finished the game with 12 hits, six of which came from the top-two batters in the order. Leadoff hitter Justin Zyvon (Sterling Heights, Mich./Macomb CC) went 3-5 with a run scored, while No. 2 hitter Rogers finished 3-5 with an RBI. Six other players had one hit each for Northwood.
Senior Matt Theiss (Midland, Mich.) had a solid start to finish his career. He allowed three earned runs in seven innings of work, striking out four while not walking anybody.
