Baseball Splits Pair At No. 17 Grand Valley State

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team split a doubleheader at No. 17 Grand Valley State Wednesday afternoon (April 8). The Timberwolves picked up a 5-0 win in game one before dropping a 5-0 contest in game two.

Northwood is now 17-13 overall, 10-4 in the GLIAC. GVSU improves to 16-11, 8-6 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves extended their winning streak to eight games after the opener. NU scored one in the first, two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to earn the win.

For the game, Northwood out-hit GVSU 7-4. NU also drew seven walks compared to two for the Lakers.

Dylan Trimarchi (Pasadena, Calif./Glendale CC) finished the game 2-2 with two walks and a pair of runs scored. Justin Zyvon (Sterling Heights, Mich./Macomb CC) added a pair of hits and an RBI. Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) registered two RBIs and a run. The duo of Alex Lewandowski (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) and Luke Bivens (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) combined for a four-hit shutout. Lewandowski allowed two hits while striking out three over four innings to earn the win. Bivens tossed the final three innings to earn the save.

GVSU scored the opening run in the bottom of the first inning and would lead the rest of the way. The Lakers added one in the third, two in the fourth and one in the seventh while holding the Timberwolves off the board.

The Lakers ended the game with a 10-5 edge in hits. Northwood had opportunities score, putting at least two runners on in four of the first six innings but failed to capitalize.

Five different Timberwolves had singles in the game to lead the NU offense.

Northwood will return home for a weekend series against Walsh this Saturday and Sunday (April 11-12). Saturday's doubleheader will get under way at 1 p.m.
