Baseball Signs Javier Martinez To National Letter Of Intent

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team has announced the signing of Javier Martinez (Darien, Ill./College of Dupage) to a National Letter of Intent.

He will have two years of eligibility at Northwood.

Martinez, who plays the infield as well as catcher, is one of the top players at the Division III level of the National Junior College Association of America (NJCAA). He is currently batting .437 with seven home runs and 69 RBIs. Martinez also had 20 doubles, two triples and seven stolen bases. His 20 doubles and 69 RBIs both rank at the top of the NJCAA Division III level.  As a freshman a year ago, Martinez hit .339 with three home runs and 42 RBIs to go along with 13 doubles.

DuPage currently stands with a 38-13 overall record on the season a year after going 39-20.

"We expect Javier to make an immediate impact in our lineup," said Jordan Bischel, who is in his second season as the head coach of Northwood.  "He has a proven track record of producing runs at the college level and also has the ability to play multiple positions defensively.  As importantly, Javier comes from a program that has won nearly 80 games the past 2 years.  He will play a key role on a very experienced team in 2017."

Northwood will finish its regular season this Friday and Saturday (May 6-7) against Lake Erie. Friday's doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
