Baseball Earns Wild 16-15 Win Over Roosevelt

RECAP: Led by a great individual performance by Caden Duryea, Northwood baseball earns a wild 16-15 comeback win over Roosevelt Sunday afternoon (March 1).

GAME HIGHLIGHTS (NINE INNINGS)

  • Duryea started his huge day right away, connecting a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the third when Anthony Manganello connected on a solo home run to make the score 3-0
  • Duryea added his second home run of the day later in the third, a solo shot that made the score 4-0 after three.
  • Roosevelt got back into the game with a three-run fourth inning.
  • The Lakers broke the game open in the sixth, scoring eight runs on just three hits. NU walked eight batters in the inning, allowing Roosevelt to take an 11-4 lead.
  • NU got a pair back in the sixth thanks to an RBI single from Mason Brunworth and a sacrifice fly from Spencer Fortier.
  • After the Lakers scored one in the top of the seventh to go up 12-6, the Timberwolves fought back. Brunworth started the rally with an RBI groundout.
  • With two outs in the inning, Matthew Meyer and Spencer Fortier had back-to-back two-run doubles that made the score 12-11 heading to the eighth.
  • Roosevelt came right back with three runs of their own in the top of the eighth to go back up by four at 15-11.
  • Duryea finished off his big day with his third home run of the day in the bottom of the eighth. His three-run blast made the score 15-14.
  • After holding the Lakers off the board in the top of the ninth, Northwood finished off the comeback win in the ninth. A bunt single by Meyer and an error plated Griffin Phillips to tie the score.
  • Manganello then ended the game with a walk-off RBI single to give the Timberwolves the victory.

  • Duryea's now has the second-most total bases in a game this season in all Division II baseball. Jack Sanders of Cal Poly Pomona had 16 in a game January 31.
