Baseball Places Five On All-Great Midwest Teams
MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team placed a total of five student-athletes on the All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference teams, the league announced Wednesday (May 6).
Senior outfielder Caden Duryea, sophomore second baseman Connor McCartan and senior starting pitcher Lucas McKinney were all named First Team All-Conference. Senior third baseman Brendan Hammer and freshman catcher Evan Kavalick each were named Second Team All-Great Midwest.
Duryea was Northwood's top offensive performer on the season, leading the Timberwolves with a .368 batting average, 11 home runs and 45 RBIs. He finished the regular season ranked 10th in the conference in batting average, fourth in slugging percentage (.684) and third in OPS (1.158).
McCartan took over as Northwood's starting second baseman this season. He is batting .320 with six home runs and 36 RBIs. Four of his six home runs have come in G-MAC play this season.
McKinney made his final season at Northwood his best, finishing the regular season with a 6-2 record and a 2.64 ERA. He struck out 48 in 58 innings of work. In conference play, McKinney led the conference with a 1.73 ERA.
Hammer hit .354 in 47 starts at third base this season for Northwood. His .470 on-base percentage is second on the team behind Duryea. Hammer also ranked third on the team with 30 RBIs and second on NU with 30 RBIs
Kavalick did not become a starter for Northwood until 24 games into the season on March 27. In 33 games this season he hit .308 with two home runs and 26 RBIs. When he took over as a starter, Kavalick had 25 RBIs in Northwood's final 26 games.
Northwood is currently competing in the G-MAC Tournament.
