Esports: Super Smash Bros Players Dominate Helheim with Crew Battle Title and Doubles Championship

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University Varsity Super Smash Bros. roster delivered an impressive performance over the weekend of March 28–29 at Helheim, a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament hosted by Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio.

The event featured multiple formats, including singles (1v1), doubles (2v2), and the collegiate Crew Battles competition. Northwood found success across all formats, highlighted by a championship victory in the Collegiate Crew Battles event. The Timberwolves defeated a strong field that included Ashland University, The Ohio State University, Purdue University Fort Wayne, Akron University, and Lubbock Christian University. In the Grand Finals, Northwood secured the title with a 2-1 series victory over Lubbock Christian.

Northwood also claimed a doubles championship, as Luis "Lui$" Oceguera and Pedro "Kurama" Alonso Jr. captured first place. Logan "SpringyL" Neubecker and Jessie "JeJaJeJa" Valdez-Vallejo added to the team's success with a fourth-place finish in the same event.

In singles competition, which featured 200 entrants from both collegiate and non-collegiate backgrounds, Northwood continued its strong showing. Four of the five Northwood players who entered placed within the top 32. Pedro "Kurama" Alonso Jr. led the way with a fourth-place finish, capping off a standout weekend that also included a doubles title and a key role in the Crew Battles championship.
