Cole Simpson Named G-MAC Defensive Athlete of the Week
MIDLAND, MICH. – Senior nickel back Cole Simpson from the Northwood University football team has been named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Defensive Athlete of the Week, the league announced Monday (September 15).
He is the first Northwood player to earn a G-MAC weekly award this season.
Simpson led Northwood to a 38-14 road win over rival Saginaw Valley in the 50th annual Axe Bowl. He intercepted a pair of passes while sharing team-high honors with five tackles to go along with a tackle for loss. The Timberwolves held a 28-0 lead at halftime, holding a 317-72 edge in total yards at the break. NU's 24-point victory is the second biggest for Northwood in Axe Bowl history and the largest for the Timberwolves in a road game.
The Timberwolves have now earned 10 G-MAC Athletes of the Week over the last three seasons.
Northwood is 2-0 on the season. They will host Thomas More Saturday (September 20). Game time is set for Noon.
