Men's Basketball Falls At The Buzzer 63-60 To Malone
The Northwood University Men's basketball team fell at the buzzer 60-63 to Malone Saturday afternoon (December 9).
Northwood is now 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the GLIAC. Malone improves to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves came out strong scoring the first six points of the game. The rest of the half was tight – as that six point lead proved to be the biggest for either team. Malone eventually took a 31-29 lead at the break. Northwood shot 36.7 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes (11-30)
Both teams made runs in the second half, leading to the dramatic finish. NU led 49-43 with 9:17 remaining in the game when Malone netted 13 straight points to go up 56-49. But the Timberwolves responded right back, scoring nine of the next 10 points go up 58-57 with 2:08 remaining. The score was tied in the final moments when Malone guard Isiah Elliott made a contested triple at the buzzer to earn the win.
For the game, Northwood finished at 35.8 percent overall (24-67) and 8-25 from 3-point range. Malone shot 36.8 percent overall (21-57) and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc (7-18). The Timberwolves out-rebounded Malone 47-36 for the contest but the Pioneers finished with a 14-4 edge in points from the foul line.
Northwood had four players finish in double figures, led by Andrew VanDierenDonk (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) with 13 points. Booker Stoudmire (Ypsilanti, Mich./Belleville) added 11 points while Will Bowles (East Detroit, Mich./South Lake) added 10 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. Coming off the bench Tony Johnson (Midland, Mich./Midland) finished with a career-high 10 points.
Northwood will travel to Ashland on Monday December 17. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
