Men's Basketball Claims 64-55 Win Over Lake Superior State
The Northwood University men's basketball team earned a 64-55 win over Lake Superior State Saturday afternoon (January 12).
The Timberwolves improved to 5-9 overall, 4-6 in the GLIAC. LSSU's six-game winning streak comes to an end – they stand at 8-5 overall, 6-4 in the GLIAC.
Lake State was the better team early, jumping out to a 17-11 lead with 11:12 remaining in the first half. But Northwood used a 13-3 run to go up 24-20 at the 6:57 mark. The Timberwolves would lead by as many as five over the remainder of the half before settling for a 32-31 lead at the break. Northwood shot 45.2 percent from the floor (14-31) compared to 35.5 percent for the Lakers (11-31). LSSU used a 3-0 edge in makes from 3-point range to keep the margin close.
The score remained close throughout the second half, but Northwood would maintain the advantage the majority of the time. LSSU would not lead after the 17:48 mark, but would tie the game on two separate occasions.
Northwood, which entered the game 0-7 in games decided by 10 points or less, finished the game strong to earn the win. The Timberwolves lead 56-55 with less than two minutes remaining when NU scored the final nine points of the game to earn the win.
For the game, Northwood finished at 41.5 percent (22-53). Lake Superior State finished at 35.7 percent (20-56).
Northwood's post players were the key to the win. Senior power forward Wes Wilcox (Roselle, Ind./Harper CC) registered a double-double, finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds to go along with a team-best four assists. Sophomore center Will Bowles (East Detroit, Mich./South Lake) finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Northwood will host Ferris State Thursday night (January 17). Game time is set for 6 p.m.
