Men's Basketball Loses At Grand Valley State 59-49
The Northwood University men's basketball team dropped a 59-49 contest to Grand Valley State Saturday night (January 19).
The Timberwolves fall to 6-10 overall, 5-7 in the GLIAC. The Lakers improve to 13-3 overall, 10-2 in the GLIAC.
After Northwood scored the first two points of the game, the Timberwolves would not lead again the rest of the way. GVSU got up by six and seven points in the first half, only to have NU come back to the tie game both times. The Lakers eventually took a 28-25 lead to the locker room. Neither team shot well in the opening 20 minutes – NU finished at 39.1 percent (9-23) while GVSU shot 32.1 percent (9-28). The Lakers used a 7-0 edge in second-chance points to earn the lead at the break.
GVSU came out strong in the second half, scoring nine of the first 11 points to go up 37-27. The Timberwolves got back within seven points with just under four minutes to go, but got no closer. Northwood shot just 25.0 percent from the floor in the second half (7-28).
For the game, Northwood shot 31.4 percent from the floor (16-51) while GVSU finished at 38.8 percent (19-49). NU was out-rebounded for just the second time this season, as the Lakers finished with a 37-34 edge on the boards and a 9-3 advantage in second-chance points.
Leading the way for Northwood was Wes Wilcox (Roselle, Ill./Harper CC). He had a double-double, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Cameron Joyce (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent St. Mary's) added 10 points.
Northwood will host Michigan Tech Thursday night (January 24. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
