Men's Basketball Falls At Michigan Tech 82-57

The Northwood University men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with an 82-57 loss to Michigan Tech Thursday night (January 30).

Northwood is now 13-8 overall, 9-4 in the GLIAC. Michigan Tech improves to 13-4 overall, 9-4 in the GLIAC.

The opening half was close until the final moments – neither team led by more than four points until a late Michigan Tech run. The Huskies scored the final eight points of the first half to go up 29-22 at the break. Neither team shot well in the opening 20 minutes – MTU finished at 31.0 percent (9-29) while NU connected on 32.1 percent (9-28).

The Huskies entered the game leading Division II in free throw and 3-point percentage and they got hot in the second half. MTU connected on 58.3 percent from the floor (14-24), 8-13 from 3-point range (61.5 percent) and 17-20 (85.0 percent) from the foul line after the break. NU trailed by 13 with 12:15 remaining in the game when the Timberwolves were called for three technical fouls in less than a minute. The Huskies converted all six free throws and also scored on one of the following possessions to suddenly make the lead 58-39. Northwood got no closer than 17 the rest of the way.

For the game, MTU finished at 43.4 percent (23-53) while Northwood ended up at 38.5 percent (20-52). The Huskies connected on 12 3-pointers in the game and 24 foul shots.  NU ended up with five 3-pointers and 12 free throws made. The Timberwolves were whistled for four technical fouls in the game despite entering the contest with zero for the season.

Four Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Wes Wilcox (Roselle, Ill./Harper) and Khalid King (Columbus, Ohio/North Carolina A&T). Both players finished with 13 points. Wilcox also added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) added 11 points, while Darvin Ham (Saginaw, Mich./Bridgeport) scored 10.

Northwood will travel to Northern Michigan Saturday (February 1). Game time is set for 1 p.m.
