Men's Basketball Downs Saginaw Valley State 80-58
The Northwood University men's basketball team defeats Saginaw Valley 80-58 Monday evening (February 3).
NU improves to 15-8 on the season, 11-4 in the GLIAC. SVSU is now 7-11 overall, 3-11 in the GLIAC.
The Cardinals opened with a 7-5 lead five minutes into the opening period, but the Timberwolves went on a 5-0 run to claim a 10-7 advantage and wouldn't look back. Northwood was able to convert in the paint throughout the half, taking a 39-23 lead into the locker room. NU shot 40.6 percent (13-32) from the floor and 4-12 from beyond the arc for 33.3 percent. NU also out-rebounded the Cardinals 25-12 in the opening half.
Northwood continued to pound the ball inside and was able to extend the lead to 52-33 at the 12:31 mark. Saginaw was able to cut the margin to 57-48 with less than nine minutes left, but Northwood would score the next nine points extending their lead to 65-48. The Timberwolves led by as many as 25 points in the final period and shot 59.3 percent from the floor (16-27).
For the game, Northwood finished at 49.2 percent overall (29-59) while Saginaw Valley shot 39.6 percent (21-53) from the floor. NU continues to shoot well from the foul line, converting on 16-18 for 88.9 percent. Saginaw Valley shot just 9-18 (50.0 percent) from the charity stripe. The Timberwolves finished with a 44-24 advantage in points in the paint, as well as a 44-24 edge in rebounds.
Five Timberwolves finished in double-figures, with Will Bowles (East Detroit, Mich. / Southlake) finishing with 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Wes Wilcox (Roselle, Ill. / Harper) added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Darvin Ham (Saginaw, Mich. / Bridgeport) finished with 15 points and four assists. Khalid King (Columbus, Ohio / North Carolina A&T) added 14 points – 10 of which came in the first half – and five assists. Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) netted 12 points, to go along with four assists and two steals.
