Men's Basketball Drops 83-81 Overtime Contest To Michigan Tech

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University men's basketball team dropped a dramatic 83-81 overtime contest to Michigan Tech Thursday night (February 19).

The loss drops Northwood to 13-12 overall, 9-11 in the GLIAC. Michigan Tech improves to 18-6 overall, 15-5 in the GLIAC.

Northwood led by as many as seven and were on top for over nine minutes of the opening half, but the Huskies finished the half strong. MTU scored 12 of the final 16 points of the half to go up 39-33 at the break.  Both teams shot well in the half – NU ended up at 50 percent from the floor (13-26) while MTU finished up at 48.3 percent (14-29).

The Timberwolves went up 57-55 with 11:32 remaining in the game and held the lead until the final moments of the game. MTU tied the game 71-71 on a 3-pointer after trailing by six with less than four minutes remaining. Both teams went 1-2 from the foul line in the final 36 seconds, sending the game to overtime.

The extra session was tight, as neither team led by more than two points. Northwood led 78-77 with less than a minute to go, but the Huskies knocked down two clutch 3-pointers in the final minute to go up 83-81. The Timberwolves had a pair of chances to tie or win the game in the final moments but were unable to convert.

For the game, Northwood shot 53.4 percent from the floor (31-58) while Michigan Tech ended up at 45.9 percent (28-61). Both teams connected on 15 free throws. It was the 3-point line that proved to be the difference in the game, as the Huskies knocked down 12 triples to four for Northwood.

Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./USC) led all scorers with 25 points. Will Bowles (East Detroit, Mich./South Lake) had 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) added 17.

Northwood will host Northern Michigan Saturday (February 21). Game time is set for 3 p.m.
