Men's Basketball Claims 115-85 Win Over Saint Joseph's
LOUISVILLE, KY. – The Northwood University men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 115-85 victory over St. Joseph's Sunday night (November 15).
Northwood is now 1-1 on the season. St. Joseph's falls to 0-2.
The game was a part of the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge, hosted by Bellarmine University.
Northwood's 115 points are the most the team has scored in a game since the 1997-98 season. NU scored 125 points that year against Oberlin
The Timberwolves jumped out fast early on and set the tone for the game in the opening moments. Northwood opened up a 15-4 lead in just 4:31 and would lead by at least eight the rest of the half. The Timberwolves ended up with a 56-42 lead at halftime. Northwood shot 45.5 percent from the floor (20-44) and 46.7 percent from 3-point range. NU also took advantage of 13 first half turnovers by the Pumas.
Northwood maintained control in the second half. The closest the Pumas would get is 12 points after the break. NU led by at least 29 for the final 6:08 of the contest. The Timberwolves shot 60.6 percent from the floor (20-33) in the final 20 minutes of the game.
For the game, Northwood shot 51.9 percent (40-77) overall, 44.0 percent from 3-point range (11-25) and 85.7 percent from the foul line (24-28). St. Joseph's finished at 42.6 percent overall (26-61), 27.8 percent from 3-point range (5-18) and 93.3 percent from the foul line (28-30). Turnovers and points off turnovers were a big part of the game – the Timberwolves had eight fewer giveaways (22-14) and out-scored the Pumas 31-7 on points off turnovers.
Six Timberwolves finished in double figures in the balanced Northwood offense, led by senior guard Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) with 22 points. Freshman Zach Allread (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and sophomore Nick Spitzley (Pewamo, Mich./Pewamo-Westphalia) both came off the bench to score 18 points. Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill) scored all 14 of his points in the second half. He also added five assists. Brad Schaub (Marlette, Mich./UMass-Lowell) and PJ Weaver (Dayton, Ohio/Meadowdale) added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Northwood will host its home opener Tuesday night (November 17) against Calvin. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
