Men's Lacrosse Pulls Out 14-12 Win Over Wheeling

RECAP: Northwood men's lacrosse returned to the win column Saturday (March 29), taking their matchup with Wheeling 14-12.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS 

  • Wheeling jumped out to the early lead in the first. WU opened the game with a 4-0 scoring run with their final goal of the run coming at the 6:42 mark.
  • Northwood's Dylan Ayotte eventually put the Timberwolves on the board less than a minute after the Cardinals went up four.
  • Northwood finished the first scoring two of the last three goals to hold the lead at 5-3 after one. Andrew Rogers tallied NU's second score, while Cole Williams added the third during a man-up opportunity with 1:05 on the clock.
  • Wheeling opened the second quarter with a goal before Northwood took control for the rest of the first half. The Timberwolves started what would be a 7-0 run to finish the half behind Ryder Mulvey's first score of the match, 6-4 WU.
  • Collin Webb's first goal of the season at 8:02 kept NU's offense rolling. Rogers, Drew Lockwood, Mulvey, and Williams all scored later in the second to give Northwood the four-goal edge at the half, 10-6 NU.
  • Opening the second half, the Cardinals tallied two to cut the deficit to two with 9:07 remaining in the third, 10-8.
  • Lockwood's second goal of the game pushed the lead back out to three before the teams traded goals late in the third quarter. Wheeling scored at 3:42 and Ayotte answered them back at 2:52. Webb was credited with the assist on Ayotte's goal.
  • At the end of three, Northwood led 12-9.
  • The Cardinals did not go away easily. Two early goals in the fourth made it a one-goal lead at 12:44, 12-11 NU.
  • Northwood's Mulvey proved to be the difference in the match, getting his hat trick at 12:14 and later adding his fourth goal of the day at 7:30 to squash the Wheeling momentum, 14-12 NU.
  • The Timberwolves defense stood tall the rest of the way to earn the 14-12 win.
