For the second straight game, the Northwood University men's soccer team dropped a tough double-overtime contest, falling to Notre Dame (OH) 4-3 Sunday (September 23).
Northwood is now 3-2-1 overall, 3-2 in the GLIAC. Notre Dame stands at 6-1 overall, 4-1 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves got off to a great start in the contest, netting a pair of goals in the opening eight minutes. Freshman Sam Nair (London, England/Nower Hill) scored both of the goals, the first from fellow freshman Arjun Jung (London, England/Heathland) while the second was unassisted.
That lead would not last long, as the Panthers scored in the 25th and 28th minute to even to score 2-2 at halftime. ND had a 9-7 edge in shots in the opening half.
Notre Dame extended their lead less than eight minutes into the second half, but Northwood would respond. Jack Smith (Lancaster, England) got a feed from Nair and beat the keeper to the right side to tie the score at 3-3.
The score remained 3-3 until the second overtime, when Notre Dame scored in the 103rd minute to earn the win.
For the match, Notre Dame out-shot Northwood 30-14. The Panthers also finished with a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. Freshman keeper Johannes Sterobo (Odense, Denmark/Tornbjerg) made six saves in the loss.
Northwood will host Ohio Dominican Friday afternoon (September 28). Match time is set for 4:30 p.m.
