The Northwood Timberwolves men's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over No. 8 Saginaw Valley State Sunday afternoon (September 9).
The contest was the GLIAC opener for both teams. Northwood is now 1-0-1 overall, 1-0 in the GLIAC. SVSU stands at 3-1 overall, 0-1 in the GLIAC.
Northwood netted both of the game's goals in the opening 22 minutes. NU got on the board in the 16th minute thanks to the first career goal for Adam Thomas (High Wycombe, England). He headed home a perfect cross from James DeCosemo (Stokesley, England) at the 15:31 mark to put Northwood on top 1-0.
Less than six minutes later, the Timberwolves extended their lead. After an SVSU foul just outside the box, Mitchell Brent (Milton Keynes, England) put a ball into the area, which senior defender Luke Ruff (Bradford City, England) heading into the net. It was the first career goal for Ruff, a First Team All-GLIAC performer a year ago who is in his third year in the program.
The rest of the game was dominated by the Northwood defense. SVSU had the majority of the possession in the second half, but the Northwood final third did not allow much to the Cardinals. Saginaw Valley State had eight shots in the game, of which only one was on goal.
Northwood keeper Johannes Sterobo (Odense, Denmark/Tornbjerg) earned his second straight shutout to open his career. The Timberwolves have not allowed a goal in 200 minutes of game play this season.
The Timberwolves return to action Friday (September 14) with a match against Tiffin. Opening kick is set for 4:30 p.m.
