The Northwood University men's soccer team earned a 1-0 overtime win over Malone Friday night (October 12).
Northwood, which had lost three straight overtime games, improved to 6-4-1 overall, 6-3 in the GLIAC. Malone falls to 4-6-1 overall, 4-4-1 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves controlled the play in the opening half, but were unable to break through as the game went to the break scoreless. Northwood held an 8-1 advantage in shots and had a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
The second half was more of the same. Northwood had a 9-7 edge in shots and a 2-1 advantage in corners, but were unable to break through.
Northwood finally broke through with the game-winner with less than a minute remaining in the first overtime. Liam MacHugh (Toronto, Canada/Neil McNeil) found freshman Sam Nair (London, England/Nower Hill), who headed home a rebound to give the Timberwolves the win. The goal was Nair's team-leading eighth goal of the season.
For the match, Northwood finished with a 23-9 advantage in shots. The Timberwolves also had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Northwood returns home Sunday (October 14) for a non-GLIAC game against UM-Dearborn. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
