Men's Tennis Sweeps Wayne State To Clinch GLIAC Title

The No. 13 Northwood University men's tennis team claimed the outright GLIAC Championship with a 9-0 win over Wayne State Wednesday afternoon (April 18).

Northwood finishes the regular season with a 12-0 record. That mark is the first undefeated regular season at Northwood in more than 10 seasons. Wayne State, which had a chance to share the GLIAC title if WSU had won today, now stand at 13-9 overall, 7-2 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves, who are also ranked No. 1 in the Midwest region, opened the match by winning all three matches. The closest match came at the No. 3 slot, where the Timberwolves posted a 9-8 victory. Northwood's No. 1 duo of Teddy Mebounou and Marcus Oliveira claimed an 8-4 win at the No. 1 position. Mebounou and Oliveira are currently ranked No. 11 nationally in doubles and sport a record of 9-1.

Northwood would go on to post wins in all six singles matches to complete the sweep. Five of the six matches were won in straight sets.

During the regular season in GLIAC matches, Northwood finished the year 44-4 in singles (.917) and 21-3 in doubles (.875).

Northwood will now head to the GLIAC Tournament. The event will take place Friday-Sunday (April 20-22) at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
