Men's Tennis Earns 6-3 Win Over Grand Valley

GRANDVILLE, MICH. – The Northwood University men's tennis defeated Grand Valley State 6-3 Sunday afternoon (April 6).

The Timberwolves claim first place in the GLIAC with a 5-1 conference record, 9-3 overall. The Lakers fall to 15-7 on the season, 7-3 in the GLIAC.

Northwood's top doubles team of Jean Menard (Amboise, France) and Lorenzo Montegiorgi (Velletri, Italy) picked up their tenth win of the season, defeating the Lakers top doubles team 8-0. NU dropped the second and third positions to enter singles competition trailing 2-1.

The Timberwolves fought back in singles, claiming five wins to earn the victory. Felipe Crema Batistella (São José dos Campos, Brazil) dropped just a single game in his 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 6 spot. In the No. 5 position, freshman Austin Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow) picked up his ninth win on the season earning a 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 win. At the No. 4 spot, Konstantin Zhukov (Kazan, Russia) earned a 7-6, 6-3 win for his ninth of the year. Sophomore Montegiorgi dropped just three games in his 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position. Menard is now 9-2 at the top spot after fighting for a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win against the Lakers.

Northwood will host Walsh Friday (April 11), Malone on Saturday (April 12) and Lake Erie on Sunday (April 13). Match times are set for 1 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
