Men's Tennis Clinches 20th Straight GLIAC Championship With 5-4 Win At Ferris State
BIG RAPIDS, MICH. – The Northwood University men's tennis team clinched a share of its 20th straight GLIAC Championship with a 5-4 road win over Ferris State Thursday afternoon (April 17).
Northwood is now 13-3 overall, 9-1 in the GLIAC. Ferris State stands at 9-13 overall, 9-3 in the GLIAC.
The Timberwolves opened the match with a win at the No. 3 doubles by Austin Woody (Midland, Mich./Dow) and Salikh Gilmutdinov (Kazan, Russia). The final two doubles matches both went to tiebreakers, with both teams winning one match. NU 's top team of Jean Menard (Amboise, France) and Lorenzo Montegiorgi (Velletri, Italy) gave Northwood a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
The singles matches also proved to be close, as both teams win three matches while three contests went the full three sets. Montegiorgi, Gilmutdinov and Felipe Crema Batistella (São José dos Campos, Brazil) all won matches for the Timberwolves.
Northwood will conclude the regular season with a match at Wayne State Monday (April 21). The Warriors can earn a share of the title with a win over the Timberwolves. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
