Men's Tennis Claims GLIAC Tournament Championship With 5-3 Win Over Ferris State

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University men's tennis team claimed the 2015 GLIAC Tournament Championship with a 5-3 win over Ferris State Sunday (April 26).

Northwood, seeded third in the tournament, improves to 15-4 on the season. Top-seeded Ferris State falls to 17-6.

Northwood, which dropped a 6-3 contest at Ferris State in the regular season, trailed 2-1 after doubles. FSU picked up an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while Northwood's team of Salikh Gilmutdinov and Tanini Kader won 8-5 at the No. 3 position. The Bulldogs earned the lead after doubles thanks to winning the No. 2 match in a tiebreaker 9-8.

Singles proved to be a different story for the Timberwolves, as Northwood posted wins in four of the six matches.  Sebastian Equez, Konstantin Zhukov all picked up 6-3, 6-4 wins for the Timberwolves. NU's final win came at the No. 6 singles position thanks to a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 by Kader.

Northwood will now advance to the NCAA Tournament.
