Indoor Track Teams Compete At GVSU Big Meet
The Northwood University indoor track and field teams traveled to the GVSU Big Meet on Saturday (February 15) at the Kelly Family Sports Center in Allendale, Mich.
In one of the largest meets in the country, the GVSU Big Meet featured athletes from Northwood, Ashland, Central Michigan, Ferris State, Findlay, Grand Valley State, Hillsdale, Lake Superior State, Michigan State, Northern Michigan, Notre Dame, Saginaw Valley State, Wayne State, Western Michigan, among others.
The Timberwolves ran their best meet of the season, according to head coach Jamie Moreno. The women's Distance Medley Relay broke the school record with a time of 11:57.40. This also qualified the team of Madison Pines (Troy, Mich.), Marsadie Cinato (Warren, Mich. / Woods Tower), Jennifer McKenna (Orchard Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) and Danielle Miller(Clinton Twp, Mich. / Fraser) at a national provisional mark. Currently, the DMR is ranked 19thin the country. Pines also ran the open 800 clocking a provisional qualifying time of 2:13.52, moving her up to the 17th ranking in the country. Running her personal best in the 5K with a 17:07.30, Miller also qualifies provisionally for nationals. She now ranks 12th in the country. After running a 0:57 split in the DMR, Cinato ran 0:58.20 in the open 400 later in the day. "This was a great double and big breakthrough for her!" mentioned coach Moreno.Kelsey Burgess (Byron Center, Mich. / Grand Rapids South Christian) also ran her best race of the year in the 5K (17:49.80), beating her personal best by fifteen seconds. Elaina Meadows(Schoolcraft, Mich.) placed fifth in the long Jump with a leap of 17-02.
On the men's side, Marcus Rogers (Howell, Mich. / Pinckney) ran a 3:04 in the opening leg (1200 meters) on the DMR, to come back and run a 4:18.27 mile - good for eighth place and third best in school history. Mike Ankoviak (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) ran a personal best in the 200 to finish eighth (among 76 competitors) with a time of 22.26. Close behind was Wally Clay (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Southwestern) for his season's best time of 22.31. Freshman Kyle Vandersyde (Hopkins, Mich.) placed fifth in the 60 meter hurdles clocking 8.99.
The Timberwolves will compete next weekend at the Hillsdale Tune Up on Saturday (February 22).
