Track Teams Compete At GLIAC Championships
The Northwood University track and field teams competed at the 2014 GLIAC Outdoor Championships Wednesday-Friday (April 30-May 2).
This year's event was hosted by Lake Erie College.
The women's team placed 13th overall with 21 points. Grand Valley State was the overall winner with 185.5 points, followed by Ashland with 120. The highlight of the event was the performance of Danielle Miller (Clinton Twp, Mich. / Fraser) in the 10,000 meter run. She ran just 0.16 shy of the meet record, set by Northwood's own Kylen Cieslak in 2009. Miller's time of 35:36.24 earned her a first place finish and currently ranks #7 in the country. Miller also earned a fifth place finish in the 5,000 meter with a time of 14:21.95. Kelsey Burgess (Byron Center, Mich. / Grand Rapids South Christian) placed third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Burgess now holds the eleventh best time in the country, with a 10:52.06. Entering the meet, Madison Pines (Troy, Mich.) was the overall favorite with the best time in the GLIAC and 12th best in the country in the 1,500 meter run. She finished eighth with a time of 4:37.11.
On the men's side, the Timberwolves placed 13th with 9 points. Grand Valley State was the overall winner with 207.5 points, followed by Ashland at 171. Both relay teams scored the points for NU. In the 4x100 the team of Rayvaun Tyler (Orlando, Fla. / Oak Ridge), Korvon Harris (Detroit, Mich. / Northwestern), Josh Gardner (Howell, Mich.) and Jacob Hurrell (Cadillac, Mich.) ran 41.51 for a third place finish. Running a 3:19.68 in the 4x400 meter relay, Hurrell, Brian Grecu (Ovid, Mich. / Ovid-Elsie), Jordan Fields (Lauderhill, Fla. / Blanche Ely) and Wally Clay(Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Southwestern) placed sixth.
